Medical Video Translation from Arabic to English

Millennials in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region come second only to the US when it comes to watching time on YouTube. Arabic is a dominant language in this region, with any one of its 20+ dialects being spoken in most of the countries here.

The demand for Arabic content is increasing in entertainment, healthcare, news, and other sectors. The reach of this content is multiplied when transcribed and subtitled into English, as it can then be accessed by second-language speakers, the hearing impaired, and the diaspora. Translation into English also enables further translation into other languages.

Arabic is a language that is written right to left. Hence, when localizing or translating from Arabic to English, we need to consider some specific considerations.

The first step in video translation is transcription. Either an open caption or hard-coded file or a separate .srt file can be exported depending on the client’s requirements. The first option suits video content that may be used in e-learning. It also supports accessibility features.

Braahmam and our Paris-based partner MediaWen offer a turnkey solution for video translation that combines the best of technology as well as human effort. Videos can be transcribed using automatic speech recognition (ASR) technology. We then edit the transcriptions done with ASR to render better quality. However, this editing is usually very light as the quality of transcription is good.

The transcripts are then translated to English using machine translation (MT). This, too, would need a round of editing to eliminate any errors or style inconsistencies.

  • Generally, transcription challenges have to do with poor audio quality, distant speakers, or background noise.
  • The ASR output needs to be specific to the dialect. For a language like Arabic, different dialects are used in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Egypt and so on. Of course, you can choose to have the translations done in a neutral version, such as Modern Standard Arabic. But do a sample transcription or translation and see if it meets the expectations of the target audience.
  • The translated subtitle length in English maybe 15-25% shorter.
  • All video editing tools are not compatible with Arabic.
  • Some tools do not support bi-directional text. That is, a sentence in Arabic may have one word or some numbers in English. The tool should be able to handle such text.
  • Fonts also get corrupted, especially when subtitles are burned into the file.
  • Some content, especially from movies and television series, is hard to translate. It can involve very locale- or culture-specific expressions, interjections, or humor that do not carry well into English in literal translations.
  • The client uploads the file into Mediawen Hub. You can then assign the file to different translators depending on the languages required. The rights of each person who works on the file can be clearly defined.
  • The ASR, as well as MT output, is edited by Braahmam’s experienced linguists. If the output has to be edited for a specific Arabic dialect, we ensure that the linguist doing the post-editing belongs to that particular locale where the dialect is spoken.
  • The Mediawen Hub is UTF8 compatible and provides Arabic editor support. Hence, font display issues are ironed out.
  • Our cloud-based solution provides automatic and accurate time-stamping. This helps determine how many characters per line you want to accommodate or how many lines per space. Thus, you can sync the subtitles with an on-screen dialogue.
  • Our experienced Arabic-to-English translators don’t just translate: they make a cultural adaptation. That is, they do a sense translation rather than literally translate the words. So, if a particular joke or phrase makes no sense in English, the translator finds a parallel example in English which conveys the same meaning.
  • MediaWen Hub is a one-stop-shop for media translation, as the tech infrastructure and human editing resources are available in one place.
  • The use of ASR and MT lead to huge increases in productivity and savings of up to 30% in time.
  • You can cut downtime to market and launch multilingual products simultaneously.
  • Store and access all your video assets from one highly secure platform.
  • The workflow is highly customizable. It can even include third-party reviews.
  • You can opt for manual processes, too, if the quality demands are high.
  • The same video file can be edited simultaneously by multiple editors.
  • The Hub’s high level of transparency ensures that you can see which stage the file is in and who’s currently working on it.
  • Our localized video is of high quality because of the human touch we give it. We adapt the text and not just translate it.
